STATEMENT FROM OREA CEO TIM HUDAK ON THE 2019 ONTARIO BUDGET

The Ontario Government told us today that it wants to make Ontario ‘A Place to Grow,’ which is a theme that is inherent in the work Ontario REALTORS® do every day. By connecting young families with homes, and helping first-time buyers find an affordable place to live, Ontario REALTORS® know what it takes to build strong communities.

OREA is pleased to see today’s budget commit the Province to moving forward with its Housing Supply Action Plan this spring. Cutting red tape on development, reducing costs for home buyers and speeding up the approvals process will increase housing supply across the province, creating more affordable choices for Ontario families and first-time home buyers.

Home ownership is part of the Canadian Dream and critical to the financial well-being of Ontario families. With home ownership rates on the decline in Ontario, now more than ever, young families need the Ford Government to be a champion of affordable home ownership.

Since 2016, REALTORS® have put bold ideas on the table to tackle the housing supply crisis and reduce costs for first-time home buyers. Keeping the dream of home ownership alive for the next generation of Ontarians requires bold action.

OREA encourages the Province to adopt innovative ideas like as-of-right zoning which will eliminate an onerous and often political process to build transit-oriented development. Intensification along transit lines and above GO and TTC stations has been a long-standing recommendation of OREA to get more homes built in our Province.
