Liberal MPP Dave Levac was elected speaker of the House on November 21st. This vote received a lot more attention than usual in this minority parliament as an NDP or PC speaker would reduce the opposition seats from 54 to 53, which would effectively tie Liberal and opposition votes.
In a Parliamentary system, it is the convention that the speaker votes with the government. This type of arrangement could effectively provide the Liberals with a majority position at Queen’s Park. Ultimately four Liberal MPPs ran for speaker including: Dave Levac, MPP Brant; Donna Cansfield, MPP Etobicoke Centre; David Zimmer, MPP Willowdale and Kevin Flynn, MPP Oakville.
Speaker Levac is very familiar with organized real estate through his long-standing relationship with the Brantford Real Estate Board.
