I love my job. One of my favourite things about it is meeting people and forging new relationships. Sadly, I recently had to end one.
It just wasn’t “working out” with these clients. They really wanted me to work with them, so I gave them a few chances and tried to work through things. Financially, I knew it could be lucrative, but I wasn’t happy.
Breaking up was a very difficult decision. Successful relationships are how I make a living so I was worried. It was the first time I had done this in my career, I’d never thought to do so before. Ultimately, I know it was the right choice. It felt good. It was empowering. I enjoy what I do and value that above all else.
Here are some tips if you ever find yourself in a similar situation:
Set limits and expectations with your clients.
Tell them what you can and will do. If you are not keen on taking calls at 2:00 a.m., don’t advertise that you can be reached 24/7.
Keep an even keel and remain professional throughout.
Although you are used to buying and selling real estate, clients often are not. It’s a roller coaster of emotions, be aware of that. Understand where they are coming from and try to put yourself in their shoes.
Don’t take it personally.
If you take matters personally your decisions will be fueled by emotions. It will cloud your judgment and you will find yourself overacting. Business is business. Remember that and try to separate the two.
Try to refer them to a colleague whose personality might be a better match.
