Government Reviews Ontario’s Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy

Earlier this summer, OREA made a submission to the government in response to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s review of the Ontario’s Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy. Overall, OREA applauds the government’s commitment to affordable housing. Ontario REALTORS® understand that ensuring all Ontarians enjoy a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home is crucial to the social and economic well-being of our province.

OREA made four key recommendations:

  1. Harmonize municipal rules on second suites.
  2. Encourage brownfield redevelopment by reducing the tax burden during the remediation process.
  3. Maintain or reduce taxes on housing. Exclude municipal land transfer tax as a municipal revenue tool.
  4. Say no to inclusionary zoning.

The deadline for feedback and responses has now closed but OREA will continue to monitor developments on this important policy issue.
