Earlier this month, Premier Wynne announced some changes to her cabinet. Among a number of MPPs getting promoted, is Ottawa member Marie-France Lalonde who is taking over as the new Minister of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS).

MGCS works to protect consumers and businesses in the marketplace. The ministry is responsible for the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 (REBBA) and OREA works closely with MGCS to advocate for REALTORS® and consumers on issues such as minimum qualifications for home inspectors as well as smarter disclosure for condominium owners. OREA has also successfully worked with the ministry in the past on issues such as flexible remuneration and the passage of Bill 55, Stronger Protection for Ontario Consumers Act, 2014. Over the years, OREA has developed a great working relationship with past ministers at MGCS and their hardworking staff.

Minister Lalonde was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2014 for the riding of Ottawa – Orléans. Before her appointment to MGCS, Minister Lalonde worked as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure. She is trained in social work and has held various roles within senior’s care facilities prior to her career in politics.

On behalf of our 65,000 members, OREA would like to congratulate Minister Lalonde on her appointment. We look forward to working together to support a strong and vibrant real estate market in Ontario!
