For the past 20 years, OREA has developed a strong relationship with the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP). Last year, OREA became a lead sponsor of the programme which prides itself in helping nurture young people’s interest in politics and encouraging the leaders of tomorrow.
OLIP is a highly competitive, non-partisan organization that was designed to provide backbench Members of Provincial Parliament with highly qualified assistants and give young university graduates an in depth understanding of our legislative process. During their tenure, the interns will work with a member of the government and a member of the opposition. In addition to their office responsibilities, interns will visit different legislatures in Canada and internationally on comparative study tours, meet with key figures in Ontario politics and write individual academic papers which they present at the Canadian Political Science Association’s annual general conference.
In its 38 years, OLIP has been the launch pad for many notable careers. It is not uncommon to bump into former interns at the legislature. Many former interns work in the Premier’s Office, the Ontario Public Service, academia and various government relations departments.
Some former interns even work advocating on behalf of Ontario REALTORS®, including: OREA’s own Matthew Thornton, Director of Government Relations; and Sylvia Pena, Government Relations Specialist. Matthew and Sylvia were first introduced to REALTOR® issues and OREA through the internship programme. In addition, the Toronto Real Estate Board’s Von Palmer, Chief Government and Public Affairs Officer, is another graduate of OLIP.
On behalf of the Ontario Real Estate Association, we congratulate this year’s interns on their selection and look forward to meeting them in the near future.
