October 27th was municipal election day or E-day across Ontario. E-day also marked the end of OREA’s second phase of the “Say No to Another Home Owner Tax – Don’t Tax My Dream” campaign.

The two-part campaign has been a great success, thanks in large part to the commitment of our local boards across the province. In the first phase of our campaign, Ontario REALTORS® mobilized to tell provincial candidate to oppose the spread of the municipal land transfer tax (MLTT) to other regions of the province. The tax currently exists only in the City of Toronto.

More recently, our local boards were active in spreading the word against the MLTT with municipal mayoral candidates. We are happy to report that 33 of our local boards engaged in their local elections by sending out surveys, meeting with candidates and hosting debates. Thanks to their hard work, over 60% of elected mayors from the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) have expressed their opposition to the tax.

The campaign also made a huge splash with media outlets across Ontario. This year, our campaign garnered over 30 million impressions! Our news story was covered in the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the CBC to name a few.

On behalf of OREA’s “Say No to Another Home Owner Tax- Don’t Tax My Dream” campaign team, we would like to thank all local boards for their hard work and dedication and congratulate them on all their efforts.
